If you're a man and you like to sing, you're welcome to join Men
of Note.
We rehearse every Monday (except for holidays) from September to June, at Stouffville United Church, 34 Church Street, Stouffville Ontario. Rehearsals begin at 7:30 PM and end around 9:30 PM, with a 10 - 15 minute break.
More than half of our membership commute from points in the Greater
Toronto Area, and surrounding communities.
The selection of music performed
by Men of Note is varied and ranges from operatic excerpts, to sacred;
from spirituals to traditional favourites; and even a little rock now
and then. Our present repertoire numbers almost 100 selections that
are generally arranged in four-part harmony, so the ability to read
music is a decided asset, but not a prerequisite to joining.
Our annual dues are just $100, with $50 due at the beginning of the season in September, and the remainder due in January of the following year. However members are responsible for the
purchase of the uniform concert dress
of blazer, slacks, tie, and for their own travel
expenses.
One of the choir's goals is to incorporate travel into our plans. The choir has traveled to France, England, Wales, Germany and
participated
in an extra long-weekend concert tour in Western Ontario. We went to the Canadian Maritimes in August of 2007. The choir's Travel Committee is always
studying options for tours both within Canada and overseas.
Men of Note have produced three CDs. The first
sold out in 2002, while the second one sold more than 300 copies after
the first printing. Additional copies had to be ordered to fill orders
received at concerts. The third CD, which was produced in 2006, still enjoys brisk sales.
At present, Men of Note perform about 10 times each year, and as
the number of appearances increase, membership grows. The number of
active members has more than doubled since the Choir's first concert in the Spring
of 1999.
Choir membership implies a commitment to regular attendance at practices
and concerts. To reach the level of choral singing that Men of Note
have set for themselves and is attainable, attendance goals should be
at the 80 per cent level or above.
If you've had choral experience, you'll enjoy this level of singing.
